Pure and Thick

Thin-film deposition technologies, as their name implies, do not deposit very thick coatings (typically between 100 nm - 3um), but some material may be deposited in a thicker way.

The most common applications are:

  • Gold coating (10-20um) for brazing of ceramic or inorganic components (semiconductor, medical, ...)
  • Chromium coating (3-6um) for safety applications (printing, nuclear) or to replace electroplated chromium which will be soon banned (production of chromium 6, also known as hexavalent chromium).
  • Rhodium coating (1-3um) for watches and jewellery as electroplated rhodium is only of 0.2-0.3um thickness.
  • Copper coating (5-10um) for conductive functions.
